Underwater Peoples Records
The sound of the music put out by the Washington D.C.-based record label, Underwater Peoples, mirrors the management style of its founders, Ari Stern and Sawyer Cater Jacobs. Run out of Stern's apartment, the label thrives on no-frills production and do-it-yourself (or rather, "do-it-together," as their tagline states) mentality. This works to the advantage of Underwater Peoples bands like Ducktails and Real Estate, who draw much of their appeal from their lo-fi, beach-fuzz vibe. Other U.P.R. artists such as Mountain Man and Liam the Younger take on - and rise to - the challenge of creating folk music that feels current, relevant, and refreshing. Last Friday the label released their first 12" LP (all previous releases were 7" records) from Alex Bleeker and The Freaks - a band that falls somewhere between these categories. With members from both Ducktails and Real Estate, and with a Mountain Man cover on the album, the record proves to be a true embodiment of the Underwater Peoples' "do-it-together" mantra.
