Album Review: Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
by Samuel on June 23, 2009
Bibio's new album entitled Ambivalence Avenue has got me by the ears and I can't put it away. I'm usually skeptical about one man bands (haha) but multi-instrumentalist guys like this impress me a lot, sort of like Peter Broderick or James Mercer. Hailing from England, Bibio, AKA Stephen Wilkinson, has created an interesting blend of electronic pop that glows and tip toes around folky undertones. The record from start to finish is never boring, but sometimes a little fast-paced. On tracks like The Palm of Your Wave, Wilkinson sings gently, reminiscent of Iron & Wine with a dash of Paul Simon. On other songs like S'Vive and Jealous of Roses, his lyrics and melodies demand attention and breathe well with other Warp Records acts. There are some clever breaks and samples, bringing out an ambient quality that makes for an old-fashioned aesthetic, which is not clearly determined, but suits Wilkinson nicely. I've been bumping this album for a week or two and it's yet to get old, so go get yourself a copy and let it ride.
