Artist Watch: Wabash
by Samuel on July 16, 2009
Wabash is a college in Crawfordsville, Indiana but it's also the stage name of a kid named Griffin. His playful, lo-fi recordings are honest and quaint, recalling summer flings and hometown regrets. He has a few DIY releases under his belt and his most recent titled Glucose has been on repeat in my ears. His simple piano-boom bap sound is reminiscent of bedroom-pop stars such as Say Hi (formerly Say Hi To Your Mom) and Casiotone for The Painfully Alone. His voice trembles on songs like "This Summer in The Goldmine," and on the soft Yamaha-synth track "Sweaters," with lyrics like, "I don't think there could be anything better then when my cat puts holes in my sweaters cause it proves that she likes me." His lyrics sometimes remind me of Mike Kinsella aka Owen, especially on an older song titled "Chords," from the release "Climbing Trees and Eating Branches." So go check out Wabash on MySpace and support him at the upcoming Southwest Folk Fest in Illinois if you're around!
