It has taken Staygold over two years to premier their music video for "Backseat (Feat. Spank Rock, Damien Adore, and Lady Tigra), but alas it has arrived! I'm still not sure what the concept is for this music video. Three girls willingly kidnap a guy and take them to meet a gangster old lady? Nevertheless the bright colors work well with the infectious tongue-in-cheek, electro sound of the song. Regardless of what the video is supposed to be about, always remember to stay gold, Ponyboy. Whether in the backseat of a car or in life, stay gold.

Rihanna - You Da One

Aside from the masterpiece "We Found Love," "You Da One" is the only other track that validates the existence of Rihanna's Talk That Talk. I say this because the other day I was driving and it came on the radio, and despite the fact that I don't know any of the words, I started belting the song...alone...in an awful faux-Carribean accent...but that is neither here nor there. The point is "You Da One" has made a lasting impression on me. The video is highly stylized and yet another example of RiRi trying to prove that she is "different," "hard," "edgy," and of course, "sexy," but as much I as hate on her, I know deep down I'm just jealous because I could never pull off a sexy Clockwork Orange look :(

Mayer Hawthorne - Dreaming

In early November, I flew to good ole Detroit to spend some time with previous HeavyRoc Music blogger Kristine and check out the Motor City (and Ann Arbor) first hand. From previous posts, it is apparent that I am in love with Mayer Hawthorne--nothing more to really say here. Because of her hometown-roots and general good taste in music, Kristine too shares my love for him and thus, on this trip, we spent a lot of time blasting in her car A Strange Arrangement and How Do You Do? (and The Knocks' "Rest Of Your Life" specifically) all over the city. Played multiple times during these rides, "Dreaming" is Mayer's second single off of his sophomore album and marks a stylistic departure for the soul singer. The video, however, is in true Mayer form. Easiest way to describe it: Chuck E. Cheese meets Country Bear Jamboree meets hot girl fantasy.

Major Lazer - Original Don (Feat. The Partysquad)

M83 - Reunion

Aside from the copious amounts of turkey and hours spent watching The Wire, the highlight of my Thanksgiving break was seeing M83 in concert. Many told me that M83 would blow me away, but nothing could have prepared me for how amazing the show was. Set to many strobe lights, the quartet performed tightly and perfectly, giving their music an anthemic and dance-rave quality. One of my favorite songs off of M83's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is "Reunion." With its passionate chants and steady guitar and drums, "Reunion" translates from recording to live production flawlessly.

My good friend Dan of DanEats.com loves 2 things, good music and good food, so he dabbles in both. Music critic/lover by day and foodie/director by night he does everything with taste. He put together this amazing collection of the best Dj Screw songs you can find. No one likes digging through 34 mixtapes, so he cut to the chase and put all the bangers on one easy tape. This is what he had to say about it:

I will never forget the days I spent sitting at the computer in my parents room ravaging Napster for every DJ Premier produced song ever made. I had 12 and 20 CD booklets full of these “mixtapes”. Each one with a different title scribbled illegibly in black Sharpie that was indicative of my mood at that moment.

This obsessive behavior reared its head again this August while listening to some DJ Screw tapes. I ended up downloading 230 something Screw tapes and listening to over 2300 songs. Slow Leek is 17 of my favorites.

And a special thank you to Carlos because he made the cover happen.

Childish Gambino - Heartbeat

I got to admit that, for the most part, I don't get the whole Childish Gambino thing. He'll always just be Troy Barnes to me. Even before I became a Community fan (HELP SAVE THE SHOW), I saw one of Donald's first shows and all I remember thinking was "He's pretty good, but he shouldn't sing." Then he released "Freaks and Geeks"--which I will say is lyrically and stylistically indicative of the kind of rapper I would want to be--and Childish blew up. While I'm still on the fence about how I feel about Donald Glover as a rapping lothario, I'm 100% sure I enjoy his new single "Heartbeat." His singing in it is pretty good too!

Friendly Fires - Hurting

I don't really know what is going on in this music video, except for the semi-literal interpretation of the lyrics to "Hurting". Every time that giraffe girl touches the computer headed Friendly Fires lead singer Ed Macfarlane, he gets propelled into the air as if he has just received a mortal combat style sidekick from the Hulk. Also, I'm pretty sure he hits the facade used in the TV show New Girl.

Mindless Behavior - Mrs. Right

I lost all credibility with my friends this past summer when I finally watched Never Say Never and became an enthusiastic "belieber." With this said, if you haven't seen the film, watch it and TELL ME YOU DON'T BELIEB. TELL ME. Anyway, I came across the boy-band quartet Mindless Behavior the other day, who went on tour with Bieber, and let's just say that if I had gone to that show, I would not have lived to blog about it. Mindless Behavior is the most swagged out band of all time. I said it. They are all 13/14, wear fresh gear, have inappropriate hairstyles, can dance and sing, and their music video for "Mrs. Right" was directed by Brett Ratner. The "film" also features LL Cool J, Mike Epps, Diggy Simmons, and a bunch of hormonal dancing girls thematically dressed as different countries. Shout out to Paris dancing with the Bagette and Chi-town wearing a Canadian tuxedo! Even though half of my love for Mindless Behavior stems from the ridiculousness of their group's name and mini-Puff & Mase's swagger, the song is pretty awesome too.

The S.O.S. Band - Take Your Time (Do It Right)

I went to a Werewolf Bar Mitzvah for Halloween (for those who don't know, It's a 30 Rock, not just a weird party theme)) and The S.O.S. Band's "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" was played amongst the rest of classic 80s tracks. Needless to say, this song brought me out onto the floor and it's all I've listened to all weekend. Do Halloween right people.

Sabi - WIld Heart

I have no shame in publicly admitting that I religiously watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians. One of the saddest things to happen me this past season was missing out on Kim's Fairtytale Wedding Event. It's no where to be found online or on TV and so, I will forever be left wondering what family drama ensued. This void is constantly reinforced by the promotions for Kourtney and Kim Take New York. While I will never know what Kris said to offend Khloe, I am excited about the latest season of the NY spin-off, partly because of the song used in the commercials. The video gratuitously features Kim and Kourtney walking out of a helicopter in gorgeous ball-gowns with their husband/boyfriends to the tune of Sab's "Wild Heart." Sabi is an up-and-coming popstar, most notably featured on Cobra Starship's "You Make Me Feel" and Britney Spears' "(Drop Dead) Beautiful." "Wild Heart" is a digestible dubstep single that will inevitably blast Sabi out of featured bits and into mainstream success.

The Creators Project 2011

Last weekend, I was fortunate enough to attend Intel and Vice's 2nd annual The Creators Project in DUMBO. While the inaugural event was mind-blowing, this year's (which noticeably lacked Mark Ronson's involvement) was still pretty fun. The most impressive art piece goes to United Visual Artists's Origin, which took light cube to a whole other level. I caught some great and weird performances from Chairlift, John Maus, Clams Casino, A$AP Rocky, Four Tet and Justice. However, the star, of course, was Florence & the Machine, who sounded ridiculously huge underneath the Manhattan Bridge Archway. For the sake of the avid HRM blog readers, I took my flip cam, recorded some footage, and made a little video about the day. Hope you enjoy it!

The music video for PAPA's easy and melodic "I am the Lion King" is equal parts comedy and art-house. While I cannot understand the significance of head-shaving and water balloon throwing casted in beautiful cinematography, the amazing dance sequences require no explanation. Just pure enjoyment.

Emil & Friends - Crystal Ball

"This song is soooo good" is what I said aloud within the first 10 seconds of listening to Emil & Friends "Crystal Ball." Turns out it continues to get better and better. "Crystal Ball" is a successful dance floor amalgamation of many genres and is featured on Emil & Friends' Lo & Behold, which came out this week!
